“Nina, honestly, what is the point of all this?”
Nina Grigoryevna adjusted her worn second-hand skirt and sighed. She and Nikolai had dressed like poor people and taken a commuter train to meet their daughter Katya’s fiancé, Nikita. They suspected he might love Katya only for her family’s wealth, so they planned to test his reaction to a “penniless bride.”
Their protectiveness came from a painful past. Years earlier, after losing hope of having children, Nina had fallen into a destructive life. One night, a pregnant homeless woman begged her for help and died after giving birth. Nina and Nikolai adopted the orphaned baby, named her Katya, moved away, and raised her as their own. From then on, Nina devoted herself to helping people in desperate situations.
During the train journey, Nikolai questioned their scheme. Katya was twenty-four and deserved to make her own decisions. Nina insisted they were only protecting her.
Then a dirty, frightened little girl named Sara approached and offered to tell Nina’s fortune. Nina gave her chocolate and learned that beggars forced the child to collect money, beat her when she failed, and terrified her with stories about orphanages.
Nina immediately decided to help. She ordered Nikolai to call for a car, but Nikita arrived first. When Sara’s handlers appeared on the platform, he acted without hesitation, rushed everyone into his car, and drove away.
Only later did he ask, “Did we just kidnap a child?”
Nina realized that Nikita had trusted them completely. When they reached the couple’s luxurious home, he was stunned; Katya had hidden her family’s wealth from him. Ashamed, Nina confessed their plan to test him. Nikita forgave them and explained that Katya had kept the relationship secret because she feared her parents would interfere.
The test was no longer necessary. Nikita had already proved his character.
Months later, Katya prepared to marry him. Sara, whose real name was Liza, had been rescued and adopted by Nina and Nikolai after authorities discovered that her parents had died years earlier.
Before the ceremony, Nina finally told Katya the truth about her own adoption. Katya smiled and admitted she had known for years.
“You and Papa are my real parents,” she said.
As Katya embraced Nina and Liza, their unusual family stood together, bound not by blood or wealth, but by love. For Nina, that truth mattered more than any test she had planned.
